What is Rubber Lining?

Rubber lining refers to the application of rubber sheets or membranes that provide protection against corrosion in aggressive chemical environments. Rubber linings serve a variety of purposes, including resistance to acids, chemicals, alkalis, abrasion, and impact protection.

Applications of Rubber Linings

Rubber linings are employed across numerous industries, including chemicals, mining, fertilizers, electrochemical processes, steel manufacturing, transportation, and environmental sectors. These linings safeguard against corrosion, as well as metal and chemical contamination. Using cutting-edge technologies, rubber linings are manufactured in varying thicknesses to suit different industrial needs. They are available in various rubber types, with key uses including:

  • Prolonging the lifespan of industrial equipment
  • Addressing demanding applications involving:
    • Severe abrasion and corrosion
    • Extreme chemical environments
    • Intense wear conditions

Types of Rubber Used for Linings

Rubber linings are made from both natural and synthetic rubbers, with the specific type selected based on the intended purpose and application of the lining.

Natural Soft Rubber Linings

Natural soft rubber linings are typically derived from different types of poly-soft rubbers, known for their low hardness, high resilience, and flexibility. These linings are highly abrasion-resistant and capable of absorbing and deflecting the impact of abrasive forces. They are ideal for applications such as slurry tank linings, pipe linings, and pump linings. Natural soft rubber is also used in pickling tanks and storage tanks, offering resistance to hydrochloric acid and sulfuric acid solutions.

Hard Rubber Linings

Hard rubber linings are manufactured from various types of poly-hard rubber, offering excellent chemical resistance, flexibility, and high impact strength. Some hard rubber linings are graphite-based, providing superior chemical resistance at elevated temperatures, while others are exhaust steam-vulcanized, suitable for lining vessels that cannot be treated with pressurized steam. Hard rubber linings are commonly used in storage tanks, reactors, plants employing ion exchange membranes, and pipes operating at high temperatures.

Synthetic Rubber Linings

Synthetic rubbers, such as chlorprene, butyl, and hypalon rubbers, are frequently used for specialized rubber linings.

  • Chlorprene Rubber Linings: Made from polyprene rubber, these linings are resistant to weathering, ozone cracking, oil, acids, and abrasion. They are ideal for desalination plants, seawater piping, and applications like water boxes and vessels.
  • Butyl Rubber Linings: Butyl rubber is known for its excellent resistance to high temperatures and chemicals, as well as its durability due to low vapor permeability. These linings are well-suited for acid plants, flue gas desulfurization (FGD) systems, and hypochlorite storage and transport.
  • Chlorobutyl Rubber Linings: Similar to butyl rubber but easier to apply, chlorobutyl linings offer heat resistance up to 200°F and are unaffected by rapid temperature changes, making them ideal for many industrial applications.
  • Hypalon Rubber Linings: Based on chlorosulfonated polyethylene, Hypalon linings are known for their excellent chemical resistance to concentrated oxidizing acids. These linings are commonly used in vessels and pipes handling high acid concentrations or hypochlorite solutions.
  • EPDM Rubber Linings: EPDM rubber offers high tensile strength, excellent resistance to punctures, UV radiation, and weathering. Its flexibility, along with a low coefficient of thermal expansion, makes it suitable for a wide range of temperatures and environments. EPDM linings are ideal for decorative ponds, golf course ponds, irrigation systems, lakes, streams, reservoirs, landfill caps, wastewater treatment facilities, and fish hatcheries.
